Teaching the faith is one of the most important jobs in the world. It is a very high calling and is commissioned by Jesus himself: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” (Mt. 28:19) and he also charges us with the great responsibility to bring the little children to Him.

Because of the importance of this ministry, there are certain expectations of those who fill this roll. A catechist must:

• Be an active practicing Catholic.

• Be a person who strives to know, love, and serve God in word and actions.

• Be a person of prayer.

• Do the online Safe and Sacred training and have a background check.

• Attend Catechetical Staff meetings held once or twice a year.

• Support parents in their role as primary educators of their children.

The rewards of being a faith formation teacher are many:

• Persons who share the faith generally grow in their own understanding and knowledge of the faith.

• They establish a special relationship with the children they teach.

• They come to know a larger segment of people in the parish.

• They often build friendships among their co-volunteers and parents.

The Director of Faith Formation is responsible for filling catechist positions. The goal is to have two catechists at each level allowing teachers to take a Sunday off if they have other commitments. If you believe God may be calling you to be a catechist contact the Director of Faith Formation
